P0005 OBD Fault Code - Fuel Shut Off Valve Circuit Open (Causes & Fixes)

Updated: May 2

This is a fault code standing for "fuel shutoff valve control -circuit open".

P0005

Fuel shut off valve -circuit open

Wiring open circuit, fuel shut off valve

P0005 is a generic fault code that indicates a problem with the fuel pump shut off solenoid as detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM). It indicates a problem with the shut off solenoid or its circuit.

It may potentially be linked to the P0006 or P0007 trouble codes.

If a DTC is related to the powertrain, it will begin with the letter "P" when read by an OBD reader. Fault codes in the P0xxx format are generic fault codes.

What P0005 Means

P0005 is a general diagnostic trouble code that indicates a problem with the fuel pump shut off solenoid as detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM).

The fuel pump shut off solenoid is an electromagnetic switch that, depending on the position of the ignition switch, enables or stops the flow of gasoline from the fuel pump to the engine.

When the ignition key is turned, a signal is transmitted to the fuel pump shut off solenoid, which protrudes or retracts a shaft, starting or stopping the flow of gasoline to the engine.

If the ignition is turned off or the switch is malfunctioning, the shaft pops out into the fuel route, blocking the flow of gasoline.

Possible Causes

The fuel shutoff valve control circuit/open code may have several causes, such as the following.

  • A defective fuel pump shut off solenoid

  • Fuel lines clogged

  • An ECM with a fault

  • A malfunctioning ignition switch

  • A shorted or open circuit exists between the ignition switch, the ECM, or the fuel pump shut-off solenoid

This failure code might also be caused by different systems and components connected to the fuel system which is why it needs to be properly diagnosed.

This code and many other DTCs might be caused by excessive heat, normal wear and tear, vibrations, shock and impacts (from potholes, for example), rubbing and friction, corrosion, and so on.

Signs & Symptoms

The P0005 code may cause the check engine light (MIL) to illuminate on the instrument panel/dash, and it will most likely result in the following symptoms.

  • Difficulty or engine doesn't start

  • Engine may stall

  • Check engine light illumination (MIL)

Risks

It's not a severe issue, but it's likely to result in a stall or a no-start situation. This might be dangerous depending on when and where the vehicle stalls.

Diagnosing this OBD Code

The following procedure is how a technician may diagnose a P0005 error code.

  1. With a multimeter, check the ground, voltage reference, and resistance levels of the ignition switch and the fuel pump shut off solenoid.

  2. Compares the results of these tests to the manufacturer's standards.

  3. Examine the ECM cables and terminals for corrosion, fraying and damage.

  4. Checks the pressure of the fuel pump.

Many technicians feel that the problem with a fuel pump shut off solenoid fault code is always in the fuel pump, therefore they replace it completely. The true problem with this code is often external, and it may only require replacing the solenoid.

It is recommended to check if the fuel pump shut off solenoid problem is external or internal to the fuel pump. Always use a professional OBD scanner to get the most accurate diagnosis.

How to Fix a P0005 Error Code

The following are some common fixes for this issue.

  1. Changing out a faulty Engine Control Module

  2. A defective fuel pump shut off solenoid was replaced.

  3. Replacing a fuel pump

  4. Repairing an open or short in the ECM's circuits, the Fuel Pump Solenoid, or the ignition switch
